It’s been a really wonderful thing to do this 365 thing. When I first began, I was certain I’d fizzle quickly, finding lots of excuses to not pick up and go shoot, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’m learning by just doing it every day, and how much I’ve grown in just a few weeks. Not by any measurable standard, but just in my mind’s eye, I can tell that my comprehension is expanding, and my standards of what is quality is becoming narrower. I am setting higher standards for myself and while frustrating tho’ it may be to walk away from a perfectly good pile of work feeling defeated, it also comforts me. I am my own worst critique, and my own best friend. I applaud a great snap, and berate a horrible one. I am loving this.
I’m also discovering my style. I thought “man, I have no defining element to my imagery.” and you can’t rush style. So yes, I might expect too much, but after shooting for awhile, you think to yourself that you’d enjoy a little identity. I’m pleased to see a general identity slowly blossoming. I see it. I don’t know if anyone else can, but I do. I realized awhile ago that I love certain things about certain photos and gravitate towards that. It may change…like we humans alway do. But for now, I love the themes showing up in my shoots and processing.
A quote I found today made me smile. “This becoming business…well damn it, it’s tough. But we do it because we must. It’s the imperative. We are always about that treacherous and wonder-filled thing called ‘becoming'”. And I’m all “Yeah! Right on! I feel ya brother.” Because it is the imperative. It’s the one thing we must do. Keep on growing. And It feels good.
